Movies on Super Bowl besides Transformers

Thursday, January 30, 2014

The Super Bowl is the most watched TV event of the year with over 110 million people watching it on TV and more via online, which makes it one of the best platforms of movie studios to showcase the trailers of their latest movies.

Just like last year, there are four movie studios that bought ad slots for the big game, but five movies will be promoted for this year’s big game.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Transformers: Age of Extinction, The Amazing Spider-Man2, Need for Speed, Draft Day and Muppets Most Wanted will showcase their trailer during the Super Bowl XLVIII on February 2, 2014 at the MetLife Stadium East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Godzilla and Guardians of the Galaxy, however, won’t be showcasing their trailers during the big game on Feb 2. These movies plan to hype up audiences in other showy events later this year.

Advertisers for this year’s Super Bowl, including the movies that will be showing their trailers spent $4 million on a 30-second ad slot. This amount could be worth it since the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks match is expected to rake in a new viewership record.

The Studios and the movies they will promote

Disney has two movies to promote, Muppets Most Wanted and Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which will be in theaters on April 4. The Muppets movie will be tied in with Toyota which will be advertising their 2014 Highlander. The ad will have his Muppets on a joyride with actor Terry Crews, who used to be an NFL player. The second Captain America movie trailer can already be seen online and in New York taxi cabs.

However, another Marvel movie fans are excited about will not be promoted by Disney during the big game. Guardians of the Galaxy won’t have its trailer shown during the Super Bowl on Feb 2. Its director James Gunn posted on Twitter that fans should expect something very awesome soon. Meanwhile, in Facebook he said that Marvel and Disney planned to introduce the characters of this movie in the biggest way possible with the widest audience coverage. He told fans to be patient since the movie studios know what they are doing when it comes to promoting the movie.

DreamWorks will be promoting the computer game movie adaptation Need for Speed with Breaking Bad supporting actor Aaron Paul as the main cast. The movie will be released on March 14 this year.

Another Marvel, superhero movie that will be promoted during the big game is The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Sony will promote the movie’s trailer during Super Bowl XLVIII. The web slinging hero will be shown in theaters May this year.

One of the biggest movies of 2014 that countless of fans are anticipating is Transformers: Age of Extinction and paramount will promote the movie’s trailer during the big game on Feb 2. Michael Bay and the movie studio behind the fourth installation of the franchise have been creating such a big buzz in the online platforms.

Lionsgate will promote Draft Day, which will be released on April 11. The trailer of this movie will be shown during the pre-game. It is very timely, because the movie is about football with Kevin Costner as the lead actor.

Many studios opt not to promote during the big game

There are a lot of other studios that chose not to showcase their movie trailers during the Super Bowl on Feb 2. They think that the traditional brand advertisements that are hungry for attention during game day will overshadow the movies that they will promote. The constantly increasing price of promoting during the big game, which is now $4 million per 30-second slot, is another reason for these studios to opt not to advertise during the big game.

Most of the studios release their Super Bowl ad trailers, even before the game day. Movie trailer showcased during the game don’t usually reach the post-game conversations anyway.

Even Warner Bros. Has observed that paying to advertise during the Super Bowl won’t be a wise decision for them. The Studio will not promote the Godzilla trailer during game day, even if Thomas Tull is part-owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Even Fox’s 20th Century Fox opt not to advertise X-Men: Days of Future Past and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes trailers during the big game on Feb 2.

Other studios opt to advertise in other giant events, including the Winter Olympics, which will also get multitudes of audiences with probably a slight cheaper cost of airtime. Studios also take advantage of the internet.

Movie studios take advantage of social media platforms

More movie companies opt to advertise their movie trailers via social media platforms. This way, it will be faster for these trailers to become viral as they will be shared faster online. Releasing movie trailers online is one of the most effective ways to create a buzz for a movie.

Even brand advertisers during for the Super Bowl ad stage take advantage of the internet. More advertisers are releasing teasers and the whole commercials on social media platforms online weeks before the big game’s kick off.

According to SNL Kagan analyst Wade Holden franchise films would reach massive audiences easily by promoting its trailers on big event such as the Super Bowl XLVIII ad stage. However, for smaller films with specific target audiences, advertising on one of the biggest events of the year would not be wise, especially with the price per 30-minute slot. It would be better for these types of movies to debut their trailers on social media platforms online, like YouTube.

In fact, most of the movies that will be promoted during the Super Bowl on Feb 2 already have their trailers posted online.

The Captain America: Winter Soldier trailer already garnered over 27 million views on YouTube. The Amazing Spider Man 2 has more than 25 million views on YouTube. While Need for Speed trailer has over 9 million views on the same social media platform.
